Kadıköy, during the Roman and Byzantine time known as Chalcedon (Greek: Χαλκηδών), is one of the oldest settlements on the Anatolian side of the city. At the time of the Ottoman conquest, Chalcedon was a rural settlement outside the protection of the city.
