Marktplatz (Market Square), the central square in Düsseldorf's old town. It was created as part of the first city expansion in the 14th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1392. The Old Town Hall in Düsseldorf is the wing on the northern side of the market square and the oldest part of the town hall complex in the old town. It was built in the Renaissance style between 1570 and 1573 as an office building and meeting place for mayors, lay judges and the city council. The construction of the town hall from 1573 expresses the upward development of the city under the Brandenburg dukes of Jülich-Kleve-Berg.
