According to Wikipedia Eindhoven Centraal is the busiest station outside the Randstad metro region. Nonetheless, it is an important railway node with many regional (Sprinter) and Intercity connections. This is probably why in 2013 the construction of a new, much widened platform tunnel has started. You might notice when you enter the building that it is quite empty indeed. Well, that's because many shops were knocked down to make the station more spacious during the 2013-2018 renovation, both of the tunnel and the building. The tunnel is now 34 meters wide and is slightly shifted in comparison to the old tunnel. The new tunnel was put into service at the end of 2015 and fully opened at the end of 2016. It is guarded from both sides by the ticket barriers. I personally thing that's really nice, because it's great when more and more parts of your journey are automated, including the ticket control (although regular inspectors are visible as well, I actually has my ticket (OV-chipkaart) checked just after I entered my very first train in the Netherlands).
