Until the ecclesiastical reorganization in 1559, the Dom was the only cathedral in the Northern Netherlands, an area that roughly coincides with the present-day Netherlands. Until 1898, the Dom was the only church in the Netherlands built as a cathedral. Despite the missing nave and the serious destruction caused by the transition to Protestantism around 1578-1580, the Utrecht Cathedral is one of the most important Gothic monuments in the Netherlands.
