While the church in Benrath can be documented in writing as early as 1299, it was not until 1405 that Duke Wilhelm I listed both the castle and a town of Benrath in a document. Until the end of the 18th century, the settlement area of Benrath was subordinate to other then more important communities in the vicinity. Simple plans drawn around 1715 and around 1850 still show a few buildings in the area of today's Börchemstrasse and Hauptstrasse, however, a parish church of St. Cecilia is already visible.
