Schadowstraße, Flinger Steinweg before 1850, is another shopping street. It was named in 1851 after the painter Wilhelm von Schadow, who founded the Düsseldorf School of Painting. It was created on a former cart route that connected Düsseldorf with Gerresheim. During the Second World War, the buildings along the street were largely destroyed by air raids, and then rebuilt as a commercial street in the post-war period. The two-day Schadowstraße Festival (Schadowstraßenfest), held annually in late summer, is one of the larger events in the state capital.
