Soho Square, hosting since 1954 a de facto public park let by the Soho Square Garden Committee to Westminster City Council. It was originally called King Square after Charles II. Its statue of Charles II has stood since the square's 1661 founding (one year after the restoration of the monarchy) except between 1875 and 1938. From this spot, there is a church visible behind the trees. It is a Roman Catholic parish church. It was consecrated as a chapel in a building behind Carlisle House on 29 September 1792, one of the first Catholic buildings allowed in Great Britain after the Reformation. The present church building was built between 1891 and 1893, the church has an unusual longish shape due to plot constrictions given at that time. The building is constructed out of bricks with a bell-tower. (previous | next | back to album | 2020:02:12 13:23:50 | 68% of an album)
