Friedrich Wilhelm III succeeded his father, Friedrich Wilhelm II, to the Prussian throne in 1797 and died in June 1840. It is known as the king that ruled over Prussia during the Napoleonic Wars, he also created the Prussian Union of Protestant churches. At the Congress of Vienna, Frederick William's ministers succeeded in securing significant territorial increases for Prussia. However, they failed to obtain the annexation of all of Saxony.
