Until the Reformation, part of the current square belonged to the immunity of the former Mariakerk. Outside the limits of the immunity was a square that had already been used as a marketplace in 1391. Over the centuries, various squares in the city were assigned specialist markets. Utrecht was divided into four quarters and each quarter into two districts. The Mariaplaats was located in the Zwarte Knechten district.
