Achter Clarenburg, literally “behing the Clarenburg”, named after a former city castle “Clarenburg”. The house, whose cellars date back to the 12th century, has been home to the Maria Minor clandestine church since the 17th century. In the 1960s and 1970s, the demolition hammer threatened this entire area. Construction of Hoog Catharijne was imminent and there was a plan to build a main road here. Some of the demolition plans disappeared from the track, but in 1970 a large medieval building called Clarenburg was demolished.
