Neude, a square in the Binnenstad. The name Neude comes from "Node", swampy low, ad was used already in the Middle Ages. The place where the Neude now lies was marshy land, a remnant of the old Rhine bed. At the end of the 15th century, sand, boulders and rubble were dumped by order of the Utrecht city government to strengthen and raise the ground. Because the square was on the trade route from Holland to Gelre and close to the Oudegracht, it attracted merchants and became an important market place.
