On 1 August 1674, a devastating storm swept over the Netherlands and Belgium, destroying parts of the church. A first restoration campaign of the Dom Church started around 1850 under the direction of architect N.J. Kamperdijk. He carried out a number of questionable interventions, such as the addition of natural stone tracery in the gable ends of the transept, which had been empty until then. In 1921, a new campaign led by the architect D.F. Slothouwer, with a focus on the interior.
