The sneltram light rail system was constructed during the late 1970s and early 1980s. There were two branches both opened on 17 December 1983. In 2015, the Province of Utrecht became the owner of the Utrecht sneltram. In 2000s it was decided to rebuilt the network for new low-floor trams. Some people call it a death to the Stadtbahn concept in the Netherlands (in addition to the converion of the Amstelveenlijn to Amsteltram – the metro line 51 to tram line 25 in Amsterdam), but the characted of the network hasn't changed much, it's still a on-the-ground Stadtbahn system, just with the lower platforms.
