Due to its location along the river and the linear nature the city needed applicable rapid transit - the streets were overcrowded and the need for an alternative means of transport along the river was highly visible. This system, designed by Eugen Langen, although it was turned down by Berlin, München and Breslau, found its application in Barmen, Elberfeld and Vohwinkel (later merged to create Wuppertal).
