In 1841 the Düsseldorf-Elberfelder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft's line reached its end in Elberfeld. It was the first steam-powered railway connection in West Germany and the second in Prussia. The route from Elberfeld via Hagen to Dortmund followed in 1847. This section of the route was built by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft and was soon connected to the route to Düsseldorf.
