The station has been renamed several times in its history. At first it was called Elberfeld, a few years later it was renamed to Elberfeld-Döppersberg and before the I World War the name was changed to Elberfeld Hauptbahnhof. On 1st September 1930, the station was again renamed to Wuppertal-Elberfeld as a consequence of the creation of the city of Wuppertal. In 1992 the name was finally changed to Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof. The nearby central Döppersberg stop of the Wuppertal Schwebebahn and the bus station was also renamed, the suspension railway station to Wuppertal Hbf (Döppersberg).
