Paulsmühle came about with the founding of the water mill of the same name, which once belonged to Benrath Castle. The founder of the mill was probably called Paul. It was a mill powered by water from the Itter and Mönchgraben coming from Hilden. However, with the construction of the new and present-day Benrather Castle in 1755/56, the water from the Itter was mainly needed to feed the new ponds of the castle and was therefore withdrawn from the mill.
