The Burgplatz, a central square in the center of Essen. Here lies the nucleus of the city of Essen. In the area of today's Burgplatz, there was a fortified courtyard in the early Middle Ages, where the Essen Monastery was founded. In the Middle Ages, a cemetery belonging to the Essen Minster was set up on the Burgplatz site. From 1830 the cemetery, which had been closed since 1827, was moved to the cemetery at Kettwiger Tor, which was located south of the gate of Essen's city wall (south of the main railway station. On October 13, 2011, the monument to Franz Hengsbach, the first bishop of the diocese of Essen founded in 1958, was unveiled in the adjoining cathedral courtyard north of Burgplatz.
