The Marktkirche, until the end of the 19th century Gertrudiskirche, a church on the Markt. The originally Romanesque hall church, which after partial reconstruction became late Gothic, was the first Protestant church in Essen. On 28 April 1563, Pastor Heinrich Barenbroch, the reformer of Essen, held the first evangelical sermon in the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle, and on 2nd May he was able to distribute communion under both kinds for the first time in the Gertrudiskirche. After the consecration of the new Catholic Gertrudiskirche in the southern inner city, the church was officially given the name Marktkirche.
