The square is named after Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester, who purchased this land in 1630. In the 1980s, the square was pedestrianised and it was redeveloped in 2010, as part of a Great Outdoors scheme proposed by the Mayor of London (at the time Boris Johnson).
