The National Gallery, a 196 years old museum that houses more than 2300 paintings. It is one of the central objects on the Trafalgar Square. The entry is, surprisingly, free of charge (you still need a lot of time for it, obviously). It was established in 1824, when the British government bought 38 paintings from the heirs of John Julius Angerstein. The building was built in 1838, however only the facade remains the same, the rest of the building has been heavily changed during its existence.
