Speaking about the older station, it was for years part of the Metropolitan line and for a good reason. But the problem with an old Metropolitan line is that it used to be a separate railway, so it was the same problem as with the District Line, but even more - it was just, well, not a line, but a network. And although London as experience in having whole networks marked on the Tube Line with one colour, it was less than ideal. So, in 1990, the part of the line from Hammersmith to Barking (which is technically already on the District Line, but in 1936 some trains from Hammersmith to the City were extended to Barking) was made exclusively a separate, pink line. Metropolitan Line is since just the part that goes through so-called Metroland. The Metropolitan line since then finishes in Aldgate.
