In terms of the Circle Line, it used to be a full circle for many, many years. Although the line got its separate identity in 1949 (as a circle), 60 years later, in 2009, it was extended to Hammersmith, making it more of a loop than a circle. Why? Well, operating a circle line is problematic - the drivers should have some pauses for example. Now TfL can provide higher frequencies and reliability with this line being, well, a regular line and goes between Hammersmith and Edgware Road, with Edgware Road having de facto two separate Circle Line stations and of course, with more entanglement of the Metropolitan, Hammersmith and City, District and Circle lines (which is to be expected knowing the history of the Metropolitan Railway and the Metropolitan District Railway).
