According to the Treaty of Versailles, all municipalities in the border strip of Eupen-Malmedy were separated from German territory and provisionally placed under Belgium. The referendums of 1920, which went down in Belgian history as the "petite farce belge" (little Belgian farce), became a point of contention for decades between the Belgian authorities and parts of the local population, as well as between Belgium and Germany.
