Many Catholics has moved to Barmen as a result of the Industrial Revolution, which finally exceeded 100k inhabitants in 1884. The community, which has now grown to 9000 members, began to expand its church as early as 1867. However, the church was destroyed during the II World War in bombing raids in 1943 and 1945. Between 1947 and 1951 the building was makeshiftly prepared for the service. The church after changes in the second half of the XIX century is known as the third church, however the history of this construction ends in 1950s.
