On 15 March 1806, the Duchy of Berg was awarded to Napoleon's brother-in-law, Joachim Murat. He chose Benrath Castle as his residence. After the end of the French period in 1813, the General Government of Berg was given to Prussia, first provisionally and then finally according to the resolutions of the Congress of Vienna. On 15 April 1814, a joint municipality of Benrath was formed. The municipalities of Eller and Hilden were also included in this community in addition to the localities of 1808.
