In the early 1920s, plans were drawn up for the creation of a large industrial port in the area of the Old Rhine in Urdenbach (part of the Groß-Benrath). Part of this plan was the incorporation of Groß-Benrath and the communities of Monheim and Baumberg into Düsseldorf. In 1929, as part of the reorganization of the administrative districts of Düsseldorf, Münster and Arnsberg, Groß-Benrath was incorporated into Düsseldorf, despite strong resistance from the citizens of Benrath. As a concession, the citizens of Benrather were granted a separate administrative advisory board and their own administrative office by the city of Düsseldorf.
