On 18 May 1994, the square was named after Cardinal Franz Hengsbach, who was appointed the first Bishop of Essen (also Ruhr Bishop) in 1957 and made a cardinal in 1988. His resignation, which every bishop has to submit after his 75th birthday, was not accepted until 1991, five years later, by Pope John Paul II, which is considered recognition of his life's work.
