The name of the street refers to a plant called wormwood which used to grow on the London Wall and in other areas of wasteland in the City. Wormwood Street follows the line of a part of the original city wall (the continuation of the street is called London Wall after all), the wall forming the rear of the buildings on the north side of the street. The area was highly redeveloped after the 1990 IRA bombing, when the bomb exploded in the basement of the Stock Exchange Tower and after the 1993 Bishopsgate bombing. The latter destroyed the nearby St Ethelburga's church and wrecked Liverpool Street station and the NatWest Tower. (previous | next | back to album | 2020:02:11 15:48:45 | 13% of an album)
