The station was actually seen as obsolete in the XX century. Many trains were transfered to nearby King's Cross, Marylebone and mostly Euston (it is also close to the St. Pancras, so close that a future Crossrail 2 station will be shared between Euston, St. Pancras and King's Cross and the whole area will be considered a shared interchange between HS1 and HS2), which made St. Pancras obsolete in the eyes of British Rail executives.
