Kaiser Wilhelm the Second in 1898 bought a piece of land in then-Mandatory Palestine, on Mount Zion, for Der Deutscher Verein vom Heiligen Lande (The German Association of the Holy Land), the Catholic organization with their headquarters in Cologne. Although it is offically own by this organization, most of its holy places in Israel are managed by Benedictines.
