The city of Brno is divided into 29 self-governing district (městské částí), designated by the city council. To a certain extent, districts are similar to municipalities, they can also have their own symbols (emblem and flag) and similar administrative bodies, which are the council and the mayor (and according offices). However, their competences and scope of self-government are smaller and determined by the city statute. Interestingly, the cities don't have to divide themselves into districts fully, you can have e.g. outer districts, but the city center governed by the city council directly.
The division of Brno is determined by the resolution of the last National Committee of the City of Brno from 30 August 1990.
Brno-Bystrc (de:Bisterz, hantec:Bástr) is a district in the northwest of the city. Bystrc is by area the largest urban district and cadastral territory of Brno.
We visited mostly in the original part of the district, centered around the church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, with the city hall and everything. Our ubytování was I think the 10th oldest building in the village (or at least located on the 10th oldest designated plot), based on the cadastral numbering.
